Wind is the single most common reason a routine drone flight goes wrong. Before you launch, run through this checklist.
Check the sustained wind speed
Most consumer drones (under 250g to mid-size quads) are rated for sustained winds up to roughly 20-29 km/h (12-18 mph), depending on the model. Above that, expect reduced control authority and faster battery drain as the drone fights to hold position.
Check the gust spread, not just the average
A 15 km/h average with gusts to 35 km/h is far more dangerous than a steady 20 km/h. Gusts are what cause sudden altitude drops, tilted horizons in footage, and difficulty landing precisely. Look at gust speed specifically, not just the average reading.
Watch the direction, not only the speed
Wind that changes direction frequently (common near buildings, cliffs, or tree lines) creates turbulence that's harder to predict than steady wind from one direction. If you're flying near structures, assume the wind near the ground can differ significantly from wind at your intended altitude.
Rules of thumb
- Below ~15 km/h (about 9 mph): generally comfortable for most consumer drones.
- 15-29 km/h (9-18 mph): flyable for many models, but expect visible drift and shortened flight time; beginners should be cautious.
- Above 29 km/h (18 mph): consider postponing unless your drone is explicitly rated for higher wind resistance.
Before every flight
Check a live wind and gust reading for your exact location immediately before flying — conditions can shift within the hour, and forecasts issued the night before are not a substitute for a current reading.
