Lithium-polymer (LiPo) batteries, used in nearly all consumer drones, are chemically sensitive to temperature — and cold is the more common problem pilots underestimate.
Why cold hurts LiPo batteries
Below roughly 10°C (50°F), the internal chemical reactions that produce current slow down, increasing internal resistance. This shows up as reduced available capacity, a voltage sag under load, and sometimes an early low-battery warning that doesn't match a fully charged battery's usual runtime.
What this looks like in flight
A battery that shows 100% at takeoff in cold weather can trigger a critical low-battery return-to-home far earlier than expected, because voltage — not just percentage — drives most drones' safety cutoffs. Sudden altitude loss in the final minute of a cold-weather flight is a known symptom.
Practical steps for cold weather
- Keep spare batteries insulated (an inner jacket pocket works) until just before flight.
- Take off with a battery that's been near room temperature, not one that's been sitting in a cold car or bag.
- Plan for meaningfully shorter flight times than the manufacturer's stated maximum — 20-30% less is a reasonable starting assumption below 0°C (32°F).
- Land with more margin than usual; don't rely on the last 10% of indicated battery in cold conditions.
Heat matters too
At the other extreme, batteries charged or flown in direct sun above roughly 40°C (104°F) face accelerated degradation and, in rare cases, swelling. Store and charge batteries in shade whenever possible.
