LiPo batteries degrade with every charge cycle, but how you store, charge, and use them significantly affects how many usable cycles you actually get.
Storage charge, not full charge
For any battery that won't be flown within a day or two, store it at roughly 50-60% charge (often labeled "storage mode" in a drone's app) rather than fully charged. Storing at 100% for extended periods accelerates capacity loss.
Avoid extreme temperatures, both directions
Don't store or charge batteries in a hot car, direct sun, or freezing conditions. Room temperature storage, out of direct sunlight, is the safe default.
Don't fly a battery down to zero
Discharging a LiPo far below its recommended cutoff voltage stresses the cells and can cause permanent capacity loss or, in rare cases, dangerous swelling. Land with a reasonable safety margin (many pilots treat 20-30% as their personal reserve, not the drone's absolute low-battery warning).
Let batteries cool before charging
Charging a battery that's still warm from a recent flight increases stress on the cells. Give it 15-20 minutes to reach room temperature first.
Inspect regularly
Check for swelling, punctures, or a battery that no longer holds a full charge. A swollen LiPo should be retired, not "used carefully" — the failure mode for a damaged LiPo can be sudden and severe.
Cycle batteries evenly
If you own several batteries, rotate their use rather than always reaching for the same one — this keeps wear roughly even across your set instead of prematurely retiring your most-used battery.
