Wind doesn't just challenge flight stability — it directly affects footage quality unless camera settings are adjusted to compensate.
Raise shutter speed to reduce visible shake
The standard "180-degree rule" (shutter speed roughly double your frame rate) still applies, but in gusty conditions, a slightly faster shutter than usual can help reduce the appearance of micro-jitters transmitted from the airframe to the gimbal, at a small cost to motion blur smoothness.
Use a higher ND filter than you'd expect
Wind often accompanies bright, clear conditions. A higher-strength ND filter lets you maintain your target shutter speed and lower ISO without overexposing, rather than being forced into a much faster shutter that exaggerates jitter.
Enable stronger gimbal stabilization settings
Most drones offer adjustable gimbal responsiveness or stabilization strength. In wind, favor settings that prioritize smoothness over responsiveness — you're less likely to need fast reframing in windy conditions than to need shake reduction.
Shoot at a slightly lower altitude when practical
Wind speed generally increases with altitude near the ground due to reduced surface friction. Flying somewhat lower (while still respecting obstacle clearance and any local altitude rules) can mean calmer air and steadier footage.
Expect to crop or stabilize in post
Even with all of the above, footage shot in wind often benefits from digital stabilization in post-production. Shoot with a slightly wider frame than your final crop to leave room for stabilization to work without introducing black edges.
